Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino (Bolívar’s estate)

Simón Bolívar died at this hacienda in Mamatoco on 17 December 1830. Today it’s a national monument: it keeps the house and its period furniture, the old sugar mill and the Museo Bolivariano de Arte Contemporáneo, all surrounded by big trees that give real shade.

What to expect

A calm visit of a couple of hours. You buy your ticket at the museum booth, walk through the house where Bolívar spent his last days, look in on the sugar mill and finish wandering under the trees, which you’ll be grateful for at midday.

The story continues in the centre: Bolívar’s remains lay in the Cathedral from 1830 to 1842, before being moved to Caracas. Pairing the two visits is a good way to understand the city.
